There is a big difference on learning how to play acoustic guitar songs verses being able to pick a guitar up and strum out a couple sounds. Unfortunately, that’s about as far as most people go.

They think they will just be able to pick up the instrument and automatically get it after a couple of tries. In reality, you have to continue to work on your skills in order to ever truly develop. Before you learn all the cool different things you can do with a guitar, such as bending, hammer-ons, pull-offs, vibrato, strumming, and alternate picking, you need to learn the basics. You need to learn how to tune and clean

your guitar, and if any of the strings ever break or get worn out you need to learn how to replace them. Of course, checking the intonation of the instrument is very important, as is knowing the proper places to store it. Before you learn how to play acoustic guitar chords, though, you need to pick out the right model.

Your local music store will be able to help you select the right set up for your guitar if you don’t already have one. They will be able to recommend one based on the way you play, and it’s helpful because in the future they’ll know how you can upgrade the guitar as your own skills improve.

In other words, if you are serious about learning how to play acoustic guitar songs, then you will be able to keep improving as long as you want. There really is no ceiling, and the more you understand about everything involved in playing, the better you will be.

The last thing that you need to remember as you set out to learn how to play acoustic guitar chords is that you need to take practice seriously. You don’t have to practice several hours per day, but you can’t just play for a half hour each week and expect to ever become proficient with the instrument.

1. Be sure that you don’t ever let the fingernails of your fretting hand get too long. If your nails do get too long, it will have a negative affect on your playing because you won’t be able to push down on the guitar strings the way that you need to.

2. Guitars are available in different sizes, and it’s important that you get the size that feels comfortable for your body. Don’t get a guitar that is too large or too small for you, just because it was less expensive.

3. Always stretch and warm up your hands and wrists well before you play. This is very important, since it will prevent stiffness, thus improving your playing and helping to prevent strains and other injuries.

4. Practice each song until you are confident that you know it well, but don’t just keep practicing the same set of songs over and over. Doing that will only help you become very good at playing certain songs, it won’t help you to become a better guitar player in general. Practicing a variety of songs in a variety of very different genres (folks, rock, etc.) will help you to become a very versatile guitar player.

5. Be sure to tune your guitar well every time before you’re going to play. Tuning is pretty simple, and it makes a big difference in the overall quality of your playing. There are machines you can buy to tune your guitar, or there are various websites online that can help you learn how to tune it.
